Animal House Shelter and Sanctuary

Dogtime salutes Nevada's Animal House Shelter and Sanctuary.

How did your organization get started?
Animal House was founded when another local rescue group moved. That's right, moved. The director had to relocate but of course wanted to continue running the organization she founded. A couple of volunteers decided to start a new organization so that they could continue saving local animals.

What is your mission?
Our mission is to rescue animals in need or danger. We also have a spay/neuter program to help members of the community get their animals spayed or neutered and help prevent having so many homeless animals.

How do most of your animals find their way to you?
Most of our animals come from the county shelter. We try to take the ones whose time is running out. We also on occasion take animals whose humans simply can't care for them anymore.

What happens to the animals once they are in your care?
Once an animal is in our care, they immediately recieve any vet care they may need. If they are healthy, they get an appointment to be spayed/neutered and get their shots. Right now most of the animals live in our homes with us as fosters. They get a home enviornment and socialization along with a ton of treats!

Tell us about a particularly compelling animal or inspiring rescue.
We were helping a couple in need with some dog food when they mentioned they had an injured puppy and wanted to know if we could help them. We ageed to pick the puppy up and get him some vet care. When our volunteers arrived, they were met with a sea of aggressive dogs. This poor puppy had been attacked by the adult dogs and had been living with a compound fracture of one of his hind legs for two weeks. He was rushed to the vet where the leg was amputated to save his life.

He struggled so hard over the coming weeks to trust people and other dogs again. He also struggled to find the strength to stand and walk again. This little dog had gone through so much that his foster mom thought he needed a heroic name for such a heroic effort. And so Hiro got his name. Hiro has been with us for a year and is adoptable....to the right home. He is just one of those dogs who will need to choose his place in life.
